Going Independently
With a free entry pass reserved in advance you can travel to Oświęcim by train or bus and visit without a tour. What it costs, how long it takes, and the planning it demands.
Visiting independently is entirely legitimate and, for the right visitor, better. It rests on one thing: securing a free entry pass in advance.
Step one — the pass
Reserve at visit.auschwitz.org, no later than seven days before your visit and realistically much earlier for summer dates. Every person needs their own personalised pass and identification matching the name on it. Without this, the journey is wasted — you will not be admitted.
Step two — getting to Oświęcim
The Memorial is about 70 kilometres west of Kraków. Regional trains and buses run between Kraków and Oświęcim through the day; journey time is broadly ninety minutes to two hours depending on the service, and buses often stop closer to the Museum than the railway station does. Check timetables on the day you travel rather than relying on a schedule found weeks earlier.
Allow generous margins in both directions. Missing the return connection at Oświęcim in the evening is a genuinely awkward position.
Step three — the two sites
All visits begin at Auschwitz I. Auschwitz II-Birkenau is three kilometres away, and the Museum operates a shuttle between the two parts for visitors during opening hours. Allow the Museum’s advised minimum of about 90 minutes at each.
What it costs
Admission: free. Transport: the price of a regional train or bus ticket each way. A guide-educator, if you want one, is booked separately through the Museum for a fee.
Against that, a guided visit from Kraków is about $20 and removes every logistical question. The saving from going independently is real but modest; the reason to do it is control — your own timing, your own pace, no coach.
When independent travel is the wrong choice
- Your dates are within a few weeks in summer. The free passes will be gone.
- You need to be back in Kraków at a fixed time. Regional timetables are not built around your evening.
- You want a guide. Booking an educator directly is possible but adds a second reservation to coordinate; a tour bundles it.
- You have a free pass but no transport — the transfer-only option at about $32 solves exactly this.
