How Long to Allow
The Museum advises a minimum of about 90 minutes for Auschwitz I and 90 more for Birkenau. With travel from Kraków, that means six to eight hours door to door — and a departure window you do not control.
On site: about three and a half hours, minimum
The Museum’s guidance is to allow a minimum of about 90 minutes for each part of the camp:
- Auschwitz I — the brick blocks, the exhibitions, the preserved evidence. Denser, more informative, more time indoors.
- Auschwitz II-Birkenau — three kilometres away, vastly larger, mostly open ground. The railway spur, the ruins of the gas chambers, the barracks.
The Museum states it is essential to visit both. Ninety minutes each is a floor, not a target; many visitors want longer at Birkenau in particular, and organised groups rarely get it.
From Kraków: most of a day
Oświęcim is about 70 kilometres west of Kraków — roughly ninety minutes each way by road. Standard tours run six to eight hours door to door. The combined Auschwitz-and-salt-mine itineraries run to eleven hours or more.
The departure window you do not control
This catches people out, so it is worth stating clearly. Operators are explicit that your chosen pickup time is a preference, not a guarantee:
- One states the tour may start “between 5:00 AM and 1:30 PM”.
- Another gives 05:30 to 15:00.
- The exact time is confirmed the day before, by the operator.
Do not book anything else for that day — not a train, not a restaurant reservation, not a flight. If you need certainty, go independently with your own free pass, or choose an option with a fixed transfer time.
Planning the rest of the day
Honestly: do not. Most visitors return to Kraków quiet and tired, and an evening with nothing scheduled is the right way to end it. That is also the strongest argument against combining the visit with anything else.
